"Crow's Revenge"

D.M. Le Bris Copyright 2014

I just finished the last painting for my "Dreamscapes" show.
I thought I would play with one of Jean de La Fontaine's Fable
"Le Corbeau et le Renard" The crow and the Fox.
I always wondered:
Would the Crow seek revenge after the Fox grabbed his cheese?
I came up with this.....The fox hunt!
I had so much fun doing this encaustic painting!
A bit of humor helps!
 It chases away the stress
after working so hard to get this show ready!

"Dreamscape #1"

D.M. Le Bris Copyright 2014

I am preparing for a one person show, from May 10th to June 18th.
My work will be exhibited at the Hancock Library,
Daniels room, in Hancock, NH.
The theme is dreamscapes.
This encaustic painting on panel, is the first of the series.
Through the winter, I have been experimenting with new techniques,
always with the bee's wax, colored pigments, India inks,
burnt shellac and carving into the wax.
The carving is a wonderful addition to my paintings.
It reminds me a lot of etching, which I also love.
I used a pigment stick to fill in the grooves.
It creates a relief which adds dimension
and texture to the wax surface.

"Trois Oiseaux"

D.M. Le Bris Copyright 2014

More snow storms coming our way,
In my studio I am dreaming of Spring,
the sun, colorful birds, blue skies
and flowers everywhere in my garden.
I spend my days in my creative space,
 working on my bird series.
These small encaustic paintings will be part of my upcoming show
at the Hancock's Library, in NH,
during the month of May.
But I'll talk about this event, when the time comes.

"Flight of the Heron"

D.M. Le Bris Copyright 2013

Many heron land in our small pond during Spring, Summer and Fall.
Yesterday during the snow storm I was thinking of them,
flying over our house,
looking for a path through the trees to land safely into the pond.
They are so beautiful! I fell in love with these majestic birds.
I am always excited to watch them standing still,
getting ready to catch a frog or a fish,
almost invisible as they blend into the brush.
Now, my binoculars sit idle on the table,
waiting for Spring to return.
Until then, during this winter,
I will make a series of paintings celebrating their flight.
"The Flight" is the first of the series.

"NH Open Doors" weekend

D.M. Le Bris Copyright 2013

For the firs time, I participated in the NH Open Doors weekend.
I didn't know what to expect
as I shared my good friend Jessie Pollock's studio.
Jessie is also an encaustic painter and extremely talented.
I was happily surprised
to see that a good number of visitors came to visit us on both days.
The weather was sunny and cool
but perfect for a drive in the country.
People came from different part of New England
and were very curious about the encaustic process.
I did enjoy sharing and describing this ancient technique with them.
By the end of the weekend
I sold four paintings including this large encaustic, displayed above,
which I titled "Brume Matinale".
It was one of my favorite encaustic piece
and I was a bit sad to see it go.
Our creations are like our children in a way
and I felt like my child went away!

Maupiti Island, work in progress

D.M. Le Bris Copyright 2013

I am still working on this encaustic piece.
When I study it I feel that it needs more texture,
particularly at the bottom of the painting.
I have to be careful as I tend to overdo it!

This image came to me from a memory.
During my trip to French Polynesia,
alone, I visited this tiny island not far from Bora Bora.
I rented an old bicycle and spent the day admiring
and exploring the island's wild beauty.
The wind on my face felt very refreshing as I peddled away.
My lungs were filled with the scented air,
wild flowers surrounding me caressed me with their rare perfume.
I felt free and happy.
I never wanted that bicycle ride to end!
Often I recall that particular day...

"Les Marquises - Hiva-Oa"

D.M.Le Bris Copyright 2013

I have been thinking about the Marquesas Islands these past weeks.
The winter has been long and I yearn for warmth.
I had the chance to travel to French Polynesia in 2000
where I stayed and painted for 3 months.
It was a dream come true to live in Hiva-Oa
where Paul Gauguin spent the last 3 years of his life.
I was able to understand his fascination
with the Maori people and their culture.
The red, orange and green are a gift from Gauguin,
The Tiki and hibiscus are a gift from the islands.

"La Grande Demoiselle"

D.M. Le Bris Copyright 2013

I have been working hard in my studio these past month.
I switched to encaustic on wood panel.
I love painting with encaustic on paper
but I needed a change during these cold month.
La Grande Demoiselle reminds me of summer
for which I am longing for.
 Outside the snow is falling.
From my Studio's window the landscape is beautiful.

My Book "HIVA-OA In Search of Paul Gauguin"

My childhood dream was to visit Tahiti and Hiva-Oa,
where Paul Gauguin created such amazing masterpieces.
It took 40 years before I was able to accomplish that dream.
I am very fortunate that my dream came true.
This is one page of the book I am currently working on.
During my 3 months stay in the Marquesas Islands,
I wrote an artist journal talking about my daily experiences,
while sketching, drawing and painting.

"Medieval City"

I always loved medieval cities.
As a French school girl my family and I
would visit old ramparts and castles during weekends and holidays.
It was a very special time for me.
I was such a dreamer, my imagination would always run wild.
When walking through the small streets
I always felt surrounded by mystery.
The old stones of the buildings seemed to have absorbed
all the past inhabitants' secrets, century after century.
What were those secrets?

I used watercolor, acrylic and oil pastel on watercolor paper.

The art tour was a success.
We had 82 visitors which is amazing....we live so far from everything!
I only expected 50 - which was last year's number.
I sold some of my encaustic paintings

It was fun all around!
The sculptures are the work of Gerry Friedman, a wonderful artist.

My studio was renovated during the Winter and Spring months.
It is now ready and I just began working again.
I have been spending everyday painting with bee's wax.
Also called encaustic, I find this ancient medium very exciting,
although a bit capricious.
One needs the perfect temperature when working with wax and paper.

Inspiration overtook her - she created a small masterpiece

Pencil needs sharpening!
Getting ready for the creation of a special piece of art.
She gave it to me before departing.

she was "Little" Danielle and I was "Big" Danielle.
