"Les Marquises - Hiva-Oa"

D.M.Le Bris Copyright 2013

I have been thinking about the Marquesas Islands these past weeks.
The winter has been long and I yearn for warmth.
I had the chance to travel to French Polynesia in 2000
where I stayed and painted for 3 months.
It was a dream come true to live in Hiva-Oa
where Paul Gauguin spent the last 3 years of his life.
I was able to understand his fascination
with the Maori people and their culture.
The red, orange and green are a gift from Gauguin,
The Tiki and hibiscus are a gift from the islands.

"La Grande Demoiselle"

D.M. Le Bris Copyright 2013

I have been working hard in my studio these past month.
I switched to encaustic on wood panel.
I love painting with encaustic on paper
but I needed a change during these cold month.
La Grande Demoiselle reminds me of summer
for which I am longing for.
 Outside the snow is falling.
From my Studio's window the landscape is beautiful.

"Last Snow"

D.M. Le Bris Copyright 2012

I love the colors in this one.
There is only a few lines in red.
I wanted to experiment with softer colors
and put aside my favorite red.
I think it worked.

My Book "HIVA-OA In Search of Paul Gauguin"

My childhood dream was to visit Tahiti and Hiva-Oa,
where Paul Gauguin created such amazing masterpieces.
It took 40 years before I was able to accomplish that dream.
I am very fortunate that my dream came true.
This is one page of the book I am currently working on.
During my 3 months stay in the Marquesas Islands,
I wrote an artist journal talking about my daily experiences,
while sketching, drawing and painting.

Auction #4
"Medieval City"

I always loved medieval cities.
As a French school girl my family and I
would visit old ramparts and castles during weekends and holidays.
It was a very special time for me.
I was such a dreamer, my imagination would always run wild.
When walking through the small streets
I always felt surrounded by mystery.
The old stones of the buildings seemed to have absorbed
all the past inhabitants' secrets, century after century.
What were those secrets?

I used watercolor, acrylic and oil pastel on watercolor paper.
The painting comes with a white mat which will fit into a 8"x10" frame.

"Fall Foliage Art Studio Tour" was a success!

The art tour was a success.
We had 82 visitors which is amazing....we live so far from everything!
I only expected 50 - which was last year's number.
I sold some of my encaustic paintings
and much interest was given to my work.
It was fun all around!
The sculptures are the work of Gerry Friedman, a wonderful artist.

Talking about art....in my studio

I spent Saturday morning with filmmaker Bruce Barlow.
Although I find it hard to discuss my art with anyone,
Bruce was so low key and patient,
I felt quite comfortable;  I was able to talk.

Encaustic monotype on paper

My studio was renovated during the Winter and Spring months.
It is now ready and I just began working again.
I have been spending everyday painting with bee's wax.
Also called encaustic, I find this ancient medium very exciting,
although a bit capricious.
One needs the perfect temperature when working with wax and paper.

Art Tour was a success

We had perfect weather for the "Fall Foliage Art Studio Tour" weekend. The sun was smiling upon all of us. Fifty art lovers found their way to my studio. It was fun, exciting and enjoyable interacting with the visitors. I sold two paintings, two prints and many cards.
I am enclosing two pictures of my studio and two others of budding artists who came to visit.

Inspiration overtook her - she created a small masterpiece

Pencil needs sharpening!
Getting ready for the creation of a special piece of art.
She gave it to me before departing.
 Here is the little masterpiece.
Her name was Danielle and she made it for me because
she was "Little" Danielle and I was "Big" Danielle.
This is precious!

"Red Earth"

 D.M. Le Bris Copyright 2010
SOLD

I remember Huahine, an island not far from Tahiti.
I rented a bicycle and toured the island.
I traveled for six hours - many hills made my legs suffer,
but the scenery took my breath away.
As I look from a hill's top, I discovered this incredible site of
red earth and pink sand caressed by the lagoon's turquoise water.
From memory I created this landscape
recalling the light,
the Tiare flowers' scent
and the magic of the pink sand.
I used my fingers and a palette knife to create texture.

"Spring Morning"

D.M. Le Bris Copyright 2010

This winter has been hard!
Snow, sleet, rain, severe flooding everywhere.
It is time for Spring to return and shower us with gifts of beauty!
I created "A Spring Morning"
thinking of the wonderful color palette,
a feast for the eyes,
as earth awakens from its winter sleep.
I used my fingers and a palette knife
to give the painting some texture.

 Mixed media on archival board.

Beautiful Day!

What a beautiful, magical morning!
The landscape is quiet;
wrapped into a soft elegant white blanket.
The snow en-robed forest seems to be petrified, waiting...
Waiting for the first kiss of Spring.

It is time to get back to painting!

For the past year due to house renovation and having a new addition to my family - my granddaughter - I have been slightly derailed. Although I did paint, it was not everyday!!! I am beginning again and my resolution for 2010 is to paint everyday... I use two rooms in my house, the tiny dining room which I transformed into an art library/studio; there, I paint my miniatures. The easel is in the sitting room on the north/west side of the house. Now that I am set up I can begin...

"November Show Coming Up"

I have not posted any work since April due to the renovation of my home and studio.
Everything is going well and most of the heavy construction is done.
Today they are installing the downstairs bathroom.
My next step is painting the walls...I have beautiful bold colors in mind!

These past couple of weeks I have been getting ready for my "One person show" Small work on paper and wood panels (November 14th through December 19th) at the Jaffrey Civic Center in NH. Over forty paintings will be exhibited. I hope some of you will be able to stop by and see my work in person.

"Moonset Over Medusa Lagoon"

©2008 D.M. Le Bris
SOLD

During my three-month stay in French Polynesia,
I was sailing aboard a commercial freighter
one evening from Tahiti to a smaller island.
Because there were no passenger cabins on the ship,
I slept on deck with the natives.
I spent a sleepless night but was rewarded
early the next morning by
a magnificent and remarkable moonset.
Like a mirror, the smooth sea reflected the moon
and early morning colors.
This painting represents the magic of that moment.
